On Sept. 9, the Island Falls Katahdin Club met at the cottage of Mrs. Leithea Porter on Mattawamkeag Lake. A potluck luncheon, preceded by table grace given by president Laura Bomba, was served by Mrs. Porter and co-hostess, Verna MacArthur, to the 16 members and two guests who attended the meeting.
Following lunch, the meeting was called to order and the secretary and treasurers reports were read and approved. Guest speaker, Jerolyn Ireland, then gave a very interesting talk about the up-coming flu season concerning the prevention and treatment. During the meeting cards were signed to be sent to Clara Hathaway and Dorothy Williams.
The next meeting of the Katahdin Club will be Oct. 14, at the home of Doris Lynch and will include a silent auction and potluck luncheon.
Niece, Christine (Jenkins) Perkins and husband, Lynn, arrived in Island Falls on Sept.16, via a large, black motorcycle, to have an overnight visit before leaving the next day when they then planned to drive (via motorcycle) to Bar Harbor, stay overnight and return to Warner, N.H. Friday. The weather was chilly for motorcyclying, but they had the proper gear and looked forward to the long drive.
Still have the doe and her two fawns grazing in my back field. Have put out bread for them and now have a bunch of apples, given by a friend, that I plan to cut up and take out for them, Have quite a few birds in my feeders now, mostly chickadees and blue jays. Saw a gray cat run up into the cedar tree trying to get one of the birds the other day. Went rushing out and sent him on his way. Have harvested all the tomatoes, except for the cherry tomatoes, so they were safe from the frost the other night. Cherry tomatoes were covered and survived the frost. Found two or three skunk holes but filled them in. I wonder when they will retire for the winter?
