Better conditions needed for animals

To the editor:
In regard to why I don’t know the Presque Isle Animal Shelter’s board members names is I have never seen them posted and have no computer. I also had no idea there was a Web site. If the vet feels the runs are not a good idea, then that should have been explained. If it was, I never saw the explanation and neither did other people.     Perhaps the board and the potential benefactors can get together to fund a setup similar to Caribou Pet Rescue, where they converted dog runs into areas for multiple cats to be together (those that got along), and have a lot more room to move. They had shelves put in with carpeting for them to climb on and live together as a group (toys and other items were in these cages).
As to why I adopted from Caribou Pet Rescue, there are several reasons. I’m friends with two people who worked there and knew what I liked in a cat. They also knew I was used to cats with temperaments that other people couldn’t handle. I took in several cats from there that, because of their ages and temperaments, would have been put down. CPR was closing and these cats now have a home they would not have had otherwise.
I have in the past adopted from you so I’m not slighting you in that regard.
A great many cats that I’ve had over the years have been cats I’ve rescued after they were unceremoniously dumped where I live. They were given a permanent home with me and loved very much.
My latest, unexpected and last addition to my family fits that scenario. She was dumped at John and Johnnie Cancelarich’s place (about two months old — the equivalent of a two and one-half year old child). Her sister (they look almost identical and are the same age and size) was dumped that same weekend as my kitten. My younger sister has her after she was found at our parents home about 1 1/2 miles from the Cancelarich’s. Two more cats that don’t have to go to a shelter.
I do support the Central Aroostook Humane Society and always have. Periodically, I drop off food, blankets, towels, bleach, detergent and cat litter. I also collect cans and bottles that I turn into the redemption center to help out. I do this anonymously.
I’m not unsympathetic — I just want better conditions for these poor cats. There has to be a better setup for them somehow. Of course, it would greatly help if everyone would be a responsible owner.
Getting your pets spayed and neutered would solve this problem.
