The Hodgdon High School golf team finished third at the Aroostook League championships at Aroostook Valley Country Club from among five teams.
Hodgdon coach David Grant is pleased with the way his golfers have turned the season around.
“They are beginning to play smarter,” he said.
The Fort Fairfield Tigers captured the League title with a score of 364, followed by Central Aroostook High School with a 376 and then Hodgdon with a 419; Katahdin, 468 and Limestone, 501. Ashland and Southern Aroostook schools were represented by individual golfers.
The Tigers and Panthers both qualified for the state team championships, set for Saturday, Oct. 10 at Natanis Country Club in Vassalboro.
The top six golfers, shooting 90 or less, qualified for the state individual championships on Oct. 17, also at Natanis Country Club. Those qualifying as individuals were: Central Aroostook’s Kaine Kingsbury (87) and Will Delong (90); Southern Aroostook’s David Dubois (77); Katahdin’s Brandon Robinson (88); and Fort Fairfield’s Josh Churchill (88) and Ian Girvin (86).
The Tigers’ remaining scorers were: Landon Towle, 94; Steve Adams a 96; Billy Weissman, 99; Tyler Churchill, 97 and Dereck Dufour, 101.
Rounding out Central Aroostook scores were: Logan McLaughlin, 98; Abe Brewer, 101 and Tim Lawrence, 127.
Senior Chris Williams set the pace for Hodgdon, finishing with a 98. Paul Griffin shot a 102; Chris Wallace, 105; A.J. Acott, 114 and Nick Lunn, 118.
Brandon Robinson paced Katahdin, while Cody Cunningham had a 106; Matt Birmingham, 123; Brady McNally, 151 and Cordell Guptill, 158.
For Limestone, Ty Tracy scored a 113, followed by Nate Berube, 126; Mike Allen, and Julia Weatherhead, 131.
Ashland’s Mark Corella carded a 94 and teammate Taylor Condon shot a 116.
Southern Aroostook’s David Dubois had a 39 on the front nine and a 38 on the back for his total of 77.
Last week, Grant challenged his Hodgdon players to break a team score of 200. They did; by one stroke.
“I didn’t think they could at VaJoWa,” he said. “That’s our best score yet.”
The Hawks picked up eight of the 11 match points, as well. Scoring in match play golf has two points awarded to a team for each individual golfer who wins his or her match. One point is awarded for match play and another point is given to the medalist of the day. The four lowest scores are totaled and whichever team has the lowest total score receives a point. There is a total of 11 points that can be won in each match.
Against Katahdin, the Hawks won 199-237, with Southern Aroostook not picking up a team score, as David Dubois is the only competitor from that school. He shot a score of 39.
For Hodgdon, Acott had a 48, followed by Williams with a 49. Griffin carded a 50, while Wallace tallied a 52 and Lunn finished with a 56.
For Katahdin, Robinson shot a 42; Cunningham 54, McNally 81, Birmingham 71 and Guptill 70.
Robinson was the low medalist in the match.
