Golfers stroke to success

    It was a busy week for local golf squads as the season kicked off in style for teams from Central Aroostook, Fort Fairfield, Limestone/MSSM, and Ashland. The Panthers of Mars Hill and Hornets of Ashland were big winners on the week, as each came away with victories in their first two matches.

    Scoring in match play golf sees teams awarded two points for each individual golfer that wins his/her match. One point is awarded for match play and another point is given to the medalist on the day. The four lowest scores are totaled and which ever team has the lowest total score receives one point. There is a total of 11 points that can be won in each match.
    Ashland 7, Fort Fairfield 4; Ashland 11, Hodgdon 0; Fort Fairfield 11, Hodgdon 0 — In a tri-match Monday at the Aroostook Valley Country Club, Ashland (2-0) notched a pair of season-opening wins, while Fort Fairfield (1-2) earned an afternoon split. Mark Carella of Ashland was medalist for the day, with his low round of 42.
    The individual match results, with Ashland golfers listed first, were: Ashland’s Mark Carella (42) beat Fort Fairfield’s Ian Girvan (47) and bested Hodgdon’s Chris Williams (49). Girvan also beat Williams.
    Ashland’s Jordan Beaulier (52) lost to Fort Fairfield’s Josh Churchill (45) and beat Hodgdon’s A.J. Scott (57). Churchill also defeated Scott.
    Ashland’s Dylan Cyr (49) beat Fort Fairfield’s Landon Towle (50) and Hodgdon’s Chris Wallace (59). Towle also beat Wallace.
    Ashland’s Taylor Condon (48) defeated Fort Fairfield’s Tyler Churchill (51) and Hodgdon’s Nick Lunn (61). Churchill also defeated  Lunn.
    Ashland’s Amos Ward (60) beat Fort Fairfield’s Brandon Clark (62) and Hodgdon’s Matt Heron (73). Clark also beat Heron.
    Central Aroostook 9, Limestone/MSSM 2 — At the Limestone Country Club Friday, Central Aroostook won its second straight match to open the season 2-0, while the Eagles fell in their season opener. CAHS’ Kaine Kingsbury and Will Delong tied for medalist on the day as both shot 47.
    The individual results, with Panthers listed first, were: Kingsbury (47) defeated Josh Forsman (48); Delong (47) beat Ty Tracy (63); Logan McLaughlin (52) defeated Julia Weatherhead (57); Abe Brewer (56) beat Aaron St. Pierre (59); and Tim Lawrence (69) lost to Spencer Keiser (60).
    Central Aroostook 7, Fort Fairfield 4 — At the Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield Thursday, the Panthers notched their first win on the season. Panther Kingsbury was the medalist on the day with a 41. Fort Fairifeld’s Girvan was the low shooter for the Tigers with a 51.
    The individual match results, with Panthers listed first, were: McLaughlin (53) lost to Girvan (51); Kingsbury (41) defeated J. Churchill (58); Delong (45) beat Towle (54); Brewer (51) defeated T. Churchill (60); and Lawrence (62) lost to Clark (59).
