Minor League baseball
The minor league wrapped up with a round robin Aug. 4. K of C and Key Bank kicked off the affair with a thrilling game, with K of C surviving, 3-2. Ryan Player and Khasen Lowe combined to pitch a no-hitter for K of C, while Griffin Guerrette pitched very well for Key Bank. Player also did some damage at the plate, rapping a double and a single. Lowe and Max Bartley also had singles for K of C. John Saucier, RJ Gross, Grant Stewart and Guerrette all made great defensive plays for Key Bank to keep the game close. Starring in the field for K of C were Logan Michaud and Grant Bridges.
Game two was as exciting as game one, with Katahdin Trust narrowly edging Savings Bank by a count of 4-3. David Kofstad and Alex Brewer took on the pitching chores for Katahdin Trust, striking out a combined 10 batters en route to the win. Bradley Kinney and Nick Bartlett totaled six strikeouts for Savings Bank while limiting Katahdin Trust to just one hit. Kofstad picked up the lone hit, smashing a double.
Bartlett paced the Savings Bank offense with a towering home run. Matthew O’Connell added a double. Carter Doherty made the play of the day for Katahdin Trust as he tagged second base to end the game as the tying run was approaching home plate. Standouts defensively for Savings Bank were Jake Kinney and Chandler Paradis.
Savings Bank bounced back in game three, topping K of C by a score of 6-2. Adam Paterson outdueled Khasen Lowe on the mound to pick up the victory on the hill. Jake Kinney’s double and a single off the bat of John Henderson paced Savings Bank’s attack. Making big plays in the field for Savings Bank were Kinney, Paterson, and Grant Stewart.
Logan Michaud did his part to keep K of C in the game as he threw out a potential run at the plate. Colin Daigle, Jack Beaulieu, and Josh Baldwin also spearheaded the K of C defense. Lowe and Drew Henderson both doubled for K of C.
The final game of the season saw Key Bank slip past Katahdin Trust, 5-3. RJ Gross and Griffin Guerrette handled pitching duties for Key Bank, and Alex Brewer and David Kofstad pitched well in defeat for Katahdin Trust. Reaching basewith hits for Katahdin Trust were Kaleb Cyr and Denny Young.
Issac Devine and Grant Stewart each tripled to lead Key Bank at the plate, while Guerrette doubled and added two singles. Jared Kilcollins and Alex Tilley anchored the Key Bank defense. O’Berry, Young, Brewer and Kofstad all flashed some fine leather for Katahdin Trust.
Major League baseball
The Elks and Kiwanis met under the lights to decide the league championship Aug. 5. Andrew Paterson scattered four hits while allowing just two runs in the complete-game performance as Kiwanis claimed the 3-2 win. Paterson did a fantastic job pitching out of trouble in the first inning as the Elks had runners on second and third base with no outs. He proceeded to strike out two of the next three batters and catcher Ben Buckley caught a pop up to leave the runners stranded.
Buckley reached base three times for Kiwanis, socking two hits and walking once. Sam Gray drove in Byron Winslow in the bottom of the fifth to put Kiwanis up 2-0, then later came around and scored the eventual game-winning run. The Elks rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth as Chase Norton and Colin McKay both came across in the frame. The Elks had the tying run on base in Jason Bartley, but Paterson struck out the final batter to end the game. Travis Sylvain and Cooper Madore picked up the other hits for the Elks.
Byron Winslow made a fantastic play at second base for Kiwanis, while Sylvain showed off a great arm in center field as he threw out a base runner at third base in the bottom of the second inning. Paterson ended the game with 13 strikeouts while Madore, Norton, and Keeghan Lowe combined to strike out nine for the Elks.
Pony League baseball
Pony League playoffs kicked off with a quarterfinal matchup between the Wildcats and Mars Hill. Griffen Lovely got the win on the mound for the Wildcats as they held off Mars Hill by a score of 9-8. Lovely got defensive support from Scott Rhynold, Wilder York, Isaac Lajoie, Brock Cassidy, Cody Lyford and Jacob Williams. Matt Freeman’s RBI triple sparked the comeback for the Wildcats, who were trailing 7-2 headed into the bottom of the fifth inning. Also picking up hits were Lajoie, York, Cassidy and Williams.
Rod Brewer Design joined the Wildcats in the semifinals by shutting out Fort Fairfield by a score of 6-0. Evan Waddell and Jacob Player combined for the shutout on the hill for RBD. They got great defensive help from Quinn Graves, Tyler Seeley, Corey Belanger, Tyler Proulx, Connor Savage, Carter Lapointe, Aaron Kofstad, Cody Flannery, Karson Eaton, Connor Seward, Michael Donovan and Matthew Tilley. Brennan Shaw, Player, and Seeley were the catalysts for RBD on offense, while Karson Wilcox and Proulx also chipped in with some heads-up running on the base paths.
RBD took on Woodland in the first semifinal matchup Aug. 1. RBD jumped out to a 6-1 lead through the first four innings. Scoring early for RBD were Brennan Shaw with two runs, and Tyler Seeley, Jacob Player, Connor Savage and Quinn Graves with one each. Woodland stormed back in the fifth inning with five runs to tie it up, then had a chance to win in the bottom of the sixth inning. A spectacular double play in the field turned by Shaw sent the game to extra innings. However, Woodland prevailed by a score of 7-6.
Madawaska knocked off the Wildcats in the other semifinal by a score of 8-4. Wilder York, Isaac Lajoie, Ryley Norton and Cody Lyford all had hits for the Wildcats. Brock Cassidy chipped in with an RBI. Helping on the defensive end for the Cats were Kyle Goupille, Mike Guerrette, Saul Nunez and Jacob Williams.
Junior girls softball
On Aug. 3, the playoff matchup between the Rockhounds and the Thunder took place. The Rockhounds improved tremendously since day one, but the Thunder’s offensive attack was hard to stop. Kalie Ward singled twice. Jessica Cameron, Olivia Hudson, Megan McKnight and Emily Colligan all singled once.
The Rockhounds were led by Hailey Cameron, who had the game’s only double. Bailey Robichaud and Tori Harvath each singled for the Rockhounds. The Thunder picked up the win and were eager to face the Mudcats for the championship.
The Aug. 5 championship game of the Presque Isle junior girls softball league had fans on the edge of their seats the entire game. Both teams showed a strong offensive attack and aggressive base running.
The Thunder was led by Olivia Hudson, who went 5 for 5 at the plate and scored five times. Teammates Jessica Cameron and Kalie Ward each singled three times. Megan McKnight, Alexis Bell and Emily Colligan all singled once.
For the Mudcats, Krystal Kingsbury tripled, doubled and singled twice. Jordi Legassie tripled and singled twice and Taylor Williams doubled three times and singled once. Smart base running by the Mudcats allowed them to come from behind and score the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
After the game, an awards ceremony took place. Coach’s awards were received by Hailey Cameron (Rockhounds), Jessica Cameron (Thunder) and Jordi Legassie (Mudcats). The League’s Most Improved Player was Tori Harvath and the Most Valuable Player was awarded to Krystal Kingsbury.
Mini Kickers registration
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will offer a Mini Kickers program for children entering Pre-K and kindergarten this fall. Games will be played Saturday mornings at the outdoor pool fields.
The registration fee is $18 for Presque Isle residents, with an additional fee for non-residents. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, Aug. 25 and schedules will be ready Wednesday, Aug. 26. The program will begin Saturday, Aug. 29.
