    Harrisonburg, VA – Charles H. Deputy Jr., age 62, a retired dairy farmer of Rockingham County, died at his beloved summer camp in northern Maine on August 7, 2009. He was the son of Hazel S. Suter, a resident of VMRC, and the late Charles H. Deputy Sr.
    He is survived by his wife, Nancy Elliott Deputy; four daughters and spouses and nine grandchildren: Alicia and William Weaver, Tyler and Cole of Harrisonburg, Va.; Maria and Wade Robinson, Lance and Brooke, also of Harrisonburg; Laurie and William Benton, Liza and Kip of Richmond, Va., Miranda and Patrick Murtaugh, Abigail, Colin and Lindsay of Roanoke, Va.; one sister, Joyce Eshleman; his mother-in-law, Emily T. Elliott of Sunnyside; and one uncle, Dr. Byard Deputy; nieces and nephews and many longtime friends.
    Charlie was a 1965 graduate of Turner Ashby School. He was an active dairy farmer for 35 years. During that time, he served on the board for Southern States, a director for Dairymen Incorporated, Mid American Dairy Association, Dairy Farmers of America, and the Southeastern United Dairy Association. He served by appointment on the National Dairy Association and represented the southeast region of the United States. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Court Square and the Fraternal Order of Elks.
    He retired from farming in 1999 and was able to do some traveling. He was employed by S.L. Hess and Sons as a sales consultant, where he enjoyed working and helping with the farming community. His two most important loves were his grandchildren and the Red Sox, a devoted fan of both.
    The family received family and friends Friday, Aug. 14, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Shoker Hall. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, at First Presbyterian Church, Court Square, in Harrisonburg, with Pastor Doug Sterrett officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Lumberman's Museum, Patten, ME 04765; Sloan-Kettering Cancer and Research Center, New York City, 646-227-3546; or The Charles H. Deputy Jr. Memorial Fund, c/o Alicia Deputy Weaver, 2905 Pin Oak Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22801. The memorial fund will be set up for Turner Ashby High School graduates who wish to pursue a degree in agriculture at Virginia Tech.
