Telephones — One of the most interesting uses to which the telephone has ever been put is reported from the woods of Northern Maine, where lumber camps are finding it an invaluable aid during the logging season.
Houlton — The Buffalo Fertilizer have under construction an addition to their factory at the B&A, which will be 200 feet long and 50 feet wide. The basement will be built of concrete.
Boston Post Cane — The Boston Post Cane has forwarded to the chairman of the Board of Selectmen a gold-headed ebony cane with the request that it be presented with the compliments of the Boston Post to the oldest citizen of Houlton.
Houlton — The Merchant Carnival held Aug. 11 was deemed a success with 12,000 people attending. The first-place float in the parade was awarded to C.W. Starkey, his float containing five pigs, calves, sheep, lambs, ducks, geese, turkeys and hens drawn by a yoke of white faced oxen. Chadwick, the florist won second place and third went to the “Merry Widow” hat, which covered two people.

Monticello — Quite a number of our people will attend Pomona Grange in Oakfield on Wednesday. The Lowery Orchestra will furnish music.
Sherman Mills — John H. DeWitt has been selected to represent the University of Maine in the inter-collegiate dairy cattle judging contest at the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Mass.
Smyrna Mills — H.G. Fisher is installing two gas pumps of the City Service Corp. This makes the seventh gas station in this small community.
Country Club — At a special meeting of the Board of Governors of the Houlton Country Club it was voted to open the golf course for the remainder of this season to any resident of Houlton as well as outside Houlton upon payment of the regular green fee of $1 per day.Houlton Pioneer Times File Photo 1934
FARMER PROMOTES FERTILIZER — Fred J. Munroe was one of several farmers to promote Agrico Fertilizer in the mid-1930s. Munroe’s farm was located on the Bangor Road in Linneus just opposite the Benn Hill Road. Munroe states that the Agrico field produced 150 barrels to the acre compared to 128 and a half barrels using Chemicals. Mark Nason owns the farm today where he and his family have grown potatoes for more than 45 years.

Make Houlton beautiful — Plans are being made to kill burdocks growing in various places and replacing these with hollyhocks. A second project of planting red poppies has been suggested to the members of the American Legion.
Farm labor — There will be a need for 6,500 Canadian potato pickers from New Brunswick and Quebec Province to help with the County harvest this year.
Monticello — Morris Cassidy of North Amity has been appointed principal of the Consolidated School replacing Alliston Lenentine who resigned.
Missing car — A two-tone green 1956 Chevrolet sedan was reported missing to the Maine State Police by the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Dept. The vehicle was owned by Donald Oliver of Haynesville and the car contained a typewriter and University of Maine textbooks.

Houlton — Schools will open in SAD 29 next week for all pupils with an anticipated enrollment of 1,545 students.
Houlton Country Club — Rick Goodwin went 75-75 for a six-stroke victory over his nearest challengers. Martha Fasulo recorded her third straight championship and Junior Champion was Shane Gallop who cruised to a five-shot victory.
Pony Club — Cindi Grant gained a first-place award at the Maine State Pony Club Rally. Grant was riding Mr. Showboat; Megan Putnam, riding Sterling Charme brought home second.
Monticello — David Hutchinson is spending the remaining weeks of August with his parents before he leaves to complete his studies at Gordon-Conwell Seminary in South Hamilton, Mass.
