Celebrating Caribou’s 125th anniversary in 1984, the Caribou Kiwanis Club buried an air- and water-tight vault to be recovered during the city’s bicentennial activities in the year 2059.

Since that time, residents have seen significant changes take place in the country and in the community; therefore, Kiwanis members have decided to sponsor a second Time Capsule in honor of Caribou’s 150th birthday. Both time capsules will be retrieved during the bicentennial events which will take place in 2059, as the city celebrates its 200th birthday.
The Caribou school students have been participating in this Time Capsule program within their own homerooms during the past three months, as they gathered memorabilia and other items to be placed in a time capsule container.
Now, the time has arrived for the rest of the community to take the opportunity to support this project. A polyexpansion jumbo mailer, measuring 11 inches by 13 inches by 2 inches, may be purchased for $10 (same price as in 1984) at the following locations: Caribou One Stop, Food Trend, at the Caribou Chamber of Commerce office or from any Kiwanis member.
Only 204 mailers will be available for purchase and they will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Individuals can fill the container with items such as photographs, letters, recipes, awards, etc. Labeling the items for their future significance is encouraged.
The “Burial Ceremony,” of the capsule will take place at 1:30 p.m., August 28, outside the former Lion’s Community Building on High Street, adjacent to the fire station.
All mailers must be returned to the Caribou Public Library prior to Friday, Aug. 1.
