Tree huggin’ hicks or progressive consumers?

To the editor:
As society moves toward a more environmentally friendly mindset The County finds itself in an interesting position. The County is already set up to embrace this new movement and with a little help can capitalize on it to create new local jobs and spur economic growth while improving the health of the environment that we all love and enjoy.
Civilization has made a new push for locally grown foods, alternative energy sources, recycled products and reducing our overall carbon footprint. Aroostook County is actually ahead of the nation on this front. We have the ability to produce much of our own food and we are on the forefront of alternative energies with windmills going up and the constant exploration to lower our own heating and fuel costs. Our local government officials should devise an aggressive plan to encourage alternative energy and recycling companies to set up shop here in Aroostook by offering incentives and lobbying the state and federal government for grants.
As citizens we should support our local farmer’s markets and business owners and spend our dollars locally instead of downstate and on the Internet. Aroostook County has the ability to become known as the most progressive locality in the eastern United States. We should embrace this movement to save the environment and add to our own coffers in the process.
The County … it’s only natural.
