Lady Vikes head to Waterville for a run at the EM title

    Last year, it was the Viking boys tennis team heading downstate. But this year, the Lady Vikings, now 12-0 for the regular season, have brushed past their opponents in the quarter and semifinals to earn a spot in the 2009 Eastern Maine Class B Championship game today at Colby College in Waterville.

    Returning a serve during a quarterfinal singles match against  Winslow is Caribou’s Laura Collins. Collins went  on to beat Winslow’s Emma Walters and played against Sarah Albertson of Camden Hills Saturday, falling in her semifinal match 7-6 and 6-2. Collins and the rest of the Lady Viking tennis team will head down to Colby College in Waterville this afternoon for a shot at the 2009 Eastern Maine Class B girls tennis championship against Class B school  Waterville.

    On Saturday, Caribou hosted fourth seeded Camden Hills and won, 4-1. Singles: Jenna Selander def. Emma Blakeley 6-2, 7-6; Sarah Albertson def. Laura Collins 7-6, 6-2; Carlee Pinette def. Julia Kosowsky 6-1, 6-0. Doubles: Liz Barbosa-Missy Nadeau def. Katie Weiler-Mary Jane Young 6-1, 6-2; Aly Michaud-Katie Keaton def. Erika Alex-Jamie Burgess 6-2, 7-5.
    For a spot in the semifinals, the Lady Vikings defeated Winslow at home on June 4, 5-0. Singles: Selander def. Mindy Fowler 6-2, 6-0; Collins def. Emma Walters 6-0, 6-3; Pinette def. Hannah Perry 6-1, 6-0. Doubles: Barbosa-Nadeau def. Kim Curtis-Morgan Stuart 6-1, 6-3; Michaud-Keaton def. Haley Levasseur-Sara Jackson 6-2, 6-1.
    The Caribou boys tennis team ended unfortunately early this year, after a semifinal loss to third seeded John Bapst on June 4. The Vikings lost the game 3-2. Singles: Bobtom Flynn def. Shane Belanger 6-0, 6-1; Taylor Jepson def. Alex Gale 6-1, 6-0; Lucas Hubbard def. Nick Willey 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Doubles: Ryan Lad-Ian Sqydlo def. Ezra Duplissie-Cyr-Phil Smith 6-4, 6-4; Matt Cote-Jerry Belanger def. Kevin Given-Jacob Leonard 7-5, 4-6, 7-6.
    Earlier last week, the Vikings took a win in the quarterfinal round of playoffs, upsetting sixth seeded Rockland 3-2. Singles: Belanger def. Aaron Hadley 6-0, 6-0; Jepson def. Ian Ellis 6-0, 6-0;  Willey def. Ben Ward 6-2, 6-1. Doubles: Al Miller-Mike Norman def.  Duplissie-Cyr-Smith 7-6, 6-3; Devon Ramsdell-Kyle Fowlie def. Cote-Belanger 6-2, 6-0.
