The Mars Hill Rotary Club met at the Aroostook Health Center on Tuesday, June 2, at 6:30 a.m.
The special speaker was Bill Sheehan of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection Office in Presque Isle. He spoke on the water quality in northern Maine. His office is one of four in the state and covers the area from Danforth to Allagash. Their programs and responsibilities include water quality, air quality, land uses, oil and hazardous materials and solid waste issues.
Under water quality, they cover the Saint John watershed area and inspect wastewater treatment plants, handle complaints, monitor water quality, etc. This summer, the DEP will monitor over 50 locations in area streams, lakes, ponds, rivers and wetlands. There are water-quality improvement plans, called TMDLs, in place for many lakes, streams and brooks.
A watershed management has been drafted to examine causes of impairment in the upper Prestile (above the Mars Hill dam). They hope to finalize the plan late this year.
Many local waters continue to improve as specific problem spots are cleaned up. The northern Maine wastewater treatment plants are in excellent shape, although other non-point problems are harder to fix. The area is known for excellent brook trout fishing and water quality and the DEP would like to keep it that way.
Bill willingly volunteers his time to help monitor (catch) brook trout for testing.
