We could not have asked for a more wonderful morning for our Paws for the Cause walk last Saturday; it was perfect. I honestly believe fun was had by all. It took a lot of planning and teamwork to organize this fund-raiser, but so well worth it in the end. We raised over $2,700, which is amazing. People came from as far south as Brunswick to participate in this year’s walk. I specifically noticed two dogs that were just little puppies last year, attend our walk again this year. We saw many familiar faces, but also met many new friends. It was amazing to feel the positive energy and be able to participate in something so uplifting. There was not one shelter dog left to be walked; every dog at the shelter got the opportunity to get out and go for a walk. I spoke to my manager later Saturday, and she said that we had a lot of people come after the walk to walk our dogs and when she left for the day, all the dogs were sprawled out sleeping, pooped out. Awesome!
I cannot say enough about how happy we are with the turn out and the money we made.
Many people do not understand that many of the behavioral issues that they have with their dog may be easily solved with exercise. Exercise not only wears their body out, it also gives them mental stimulation and releases tension. Destructive behavior is usually directly linked to lack of exercise. So if you are having issues with your dog, it might be time to go out for a jog, take your dog swimming or play a nice game of fetch. Be sure that you increase your dog’s exercise slowly and consult your veterinarian before you make any major changes in your dog’s exercise routine.
The hot weather is here! Do not leave your dog unattended in your car! Even with the windows open, the temperatures can rise to 120 degrees within minutes. Don’t trust your air conditioning either; it could fail and your dog could die. If your pet must stay outside, be sure they have plenty of fresh water and a shady area. If you take your dog running or participate in other strenuous exercise, do so in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. When you do exercise, be sure your dog stops to drink or at least is offered water frequently. Nobody wants to lose their dog from too much fun in the sun, so please consider your pets’ well being … that is every pet guardian’s responsibility.
Reminder: it is illegal to have your dog in the back of your pickup unrestrained.
If you are looking for a “friend for life,” please consider visiting the Central Aroostook Humane Society or give us a call at 764-3441.
Please have your pets spayed or neutered.
