Holidays to Celebrate

This week many will celebrate Flag Day, on Saturday, June 14, a day that was proclaimed by President Harry S. Truman in August 1949. All Americans are encouraged to proudly hang the American flag outside their homes and businesses.
The day after Flag Day, June 15, has been marked “Fly a Kite Day,” celebrating the anniversary of Benjamin Franklin’s kite experiment in 1752 when he discovered electricity. So, after you hang our country’s flag, go fly a kite!

Retirement Party

Students and their families, along with colleagues, friends and family members of Mapleton Elementary School Principal Gail Gibson recently celebrated her years of dedication at a retirement party. Following the meal, students sang a special song to Ms. Gibson called “I’ve Got a Friend Like You” (complete with hand motions) accompanied by school music teacher, Sherry Calhoun, on the keyboard. Several students that attend the Maine Dance Academy also performed a dance routine to “Shining Star” in honor of their principal. Retired Ashland school teacher Sheila Lyons read an original story written especially for Ms. Gibson by former student, Ingrid (Braley) Sutherland. She also read a children’s story, in true teacher fashion, entitled, “Yay You! Movin’ Up, Movin’ Out, Movin’ On!” Cake and cupcakes were served to end the evening celebration. In lieu of gifts, Ms. Gibson asked that donations would be made to help cover costs for students to attend camps this summer.

Bottle Collection

The Boy Scout Troop 170 is accepting donations of bottles and cans which will help raise money to attend summer camp. Please drop off your returnables at the Parsons Street Redemption Center and let the employee know they are for Mapleton Boy Scout Troop 170. You can also call Scoutmaster Peter Starr at 764-8189 or 551-5196 to schedule a pickup.

Haystack Historical Society

The next regular meeting of the Haystack Historical Society will be held June 22 at 7 p.m. at the museum. All members are urged to attend and guests are welcome. We have a great selection of pictures of schools in the Mapleton area for your viewing pleasure.

Castle Hill Grange Hall Preservation Society

The Society would like to extend a big “thank you” to the following businesses and individuals who sold candy bars this year: Chandler Farms, the Mapleton Town Office, Clukey’s Auto, Anita Beaulieu, Sheena and Deanna McHatten, and Rhoda Wells. Thank you, again, to those who purchased the candy.
During the monthly meeting May 26, the major topic of discussion focused on installing the new kitchenette in the front of the hall. The goal is to complete the project this summer.
The hall is scheduled to be rented several times this summer. The first function will be July 11 when Richard and Patricia Watt celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. On Aug. 29, the McHatten family will be hosting a family reunion. If anyone would like more information or has knowledge of any McHatten family member that may not be aware of the reunion, please pass this information along, or contact Sheena McHatten.
The Society has voted to offer a couple’s lifetime membership for $150. If two people from the same family would like to join, this option would save $50, rather than purchasing one lifetime membership for $100.
The Grange Hall is available for rent May 1-Nov. 1. Please contact any member if you are interested in renting the hall for your event. The Society meets one night a month from February through November and welcomes new members. Please consider helping the Society preserve a piece of local history.
