HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Council of Catholic Women held its annual dinner meeting last Wednesday to install its six new officers for the year.
Lois Downing, publicist and corresponding secretary said “it was a great evening with a delicious dinner catered by Cathy Bither and James Dobbs. We even had one of our members, Lynette Dobbs,  demonstrate  her skills as a sign language interpreter.”
The council is made up of some 40 members from St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and is well known in the area for its activities that include an annual Christmas Giving Tree project to distribute gifts, clothes and toys to area children.
The group’s many other community activities include delivering Valentine gift bags to shut-ins, emergency assistance to fire and disaster victims, a scholarship program and a seminarian fund. The council also makes donations to St. Mary’s for the food bank, alter flowers and the church’s fuel fund.
