Soldier’s Monument — The beautiful Soldier’s Monument in Monument Square was dedicated on Memorial Day. The monument was constructed by the Houlton Granite and Marble works and cost $3,500, $1,000 of which was appropriated by the town and the balance was contributed by private citizens at home and in other places, who were interested in Houlton.
Crescent Park — Don’t forget the grand opening at Crescent Park a week from Friday when there will be elaborate decorations, fire-works from a float in the lake and music by Bryson’s orchestra for dancing.
Rides — Through the kindness of a number of the local automobile owners the delegates to the Woman’s Board of Foreign Missions, enjoyed automobile rides around town. All the ladies were very enthusiastic in their words of praise about the town.

Road resurfacing — One of the busiest men in Houlton these days is Road Commissioner, Wendell Porter, who, with a large crew of men is smoothing up the streets and getting ready for the application of Tarmac. Instead of using tarvia, as has been done in the past, the department will use Tarmac, a surface preserver.
Eagle Award — Donald Nealey received the Eagle Badge, which is the highest award to be given to a Boy Scout.
Fine record — Orris Hall, a graduate of Houlton High School and Ricker Junior College is a junior in the Physical Education Department of Ithaca, N.Y. She stands fourth among the girls of her school in physical fitness index tests.

Horse show — Horse lovers from Houlton and the surrounding areas will have a chance to view some of the finest horses and riders in Aroostook County at Houlton Riding Club’s Spring Gymkhana at the Hogan Farm. Judge for the event is Dr. Ray Newman, Miss Nancy Wright will be Marshall on her mare, “Miss Jo”, Mrs. George McCain and Mrs. Margaret Adams will keep points.
Dyer Brook — Miss Judy Morrison will begin nurses training at Eastern Maine General Hospital in September,
Field trip — Pupils in grades seven and eight of Dyer Brook accompanied by their teacher, Lillian Lougee, attended the Science Fair at Island Falls High School and visited the potato flake plant in that town. Mrs. Laurel McNally accompanied the group and provided some of the transportation.
Hammond — Cynthia and Carolyn McLean were guests at a birthday party given by their mother Mrs. Fred McLean. The girls received lovely gifts.
Lindsey, N.B — Houlton’s newest piece of fire fighting equipment, the 1,000 gallon tank truck was put into service when fire destroyed five buildings and several pieces of farm machinery in Lindsey. The Woodstock Fire Department requested the additional help and eight men responded with the truck. The farm is owned by Perley Strong of Littleton.

SAD 29 — It was expected that the Board would appoint a coach for the high school varsity basketball team at its June meeting. That position has been vacant since the resignation of Joe Leishman and has been advertised, however, the position is not on the agenda.
Patten — Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Anderson of Patten have received word that their granddaughter, Mary-Jayne Pullen has been named the recipient of the Scholarship Key, awarded at the University of Connecticut. She has the highest academic average in the school of Business Administration at the University.
Expanding — Milton Gervais of the Shiretown plans for a 16-unit expansion at the Motel and Restaurant on the North Road.
HRH Dietician — Heleana Cohen, Dietitian at Houlton Regional Hospital has earned status as a Registered Dietitian by the American Dietetic Association.
Littleton — James H. McBride, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry McBride has been appointed senior vice-president for Global Services Division in Albany, N.Y. McBride is a 1963 graduate of R.C.I.1984 Houlton Pioneer Times File Photo
MODELS — The Junior Girl Scout Troop No. 354 of Hodgdon with their leaders Susan Riley, Jane York and Bernadette Willette, visited the Museum at the White Building. With the assistance of Curator Betty Blake, the girls were attired in dresses from the past and modeled the outfits for the members of Brownie Troop No. 313 of Hodgdon. Models are, left to right; first row, Tiffany Karnes, Alicia Royal, Tracy Mitchell, Jennifer Haskell and Jennifer Riley; second row, Cindy Merritt, Audra Karnes, Martha Putnam, Jennifer Willette, Ellen Brown, Misty Gallop, Meg York and Rebecca Gricus. The troop members were working on a badge for “Women in History.”
