Caribou Firefighter/Paramedic Scott Jackson, 36, has been with the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department for 17 years and works there full-time. “I became interested in being a firefighter after listening to stories told by my Uncle Owen Jackson, (longtime Caribou firefighter/paramedic now deceased), he made it sound like a fun job to have,”said Jackson.
Firefighter Jackson, who is the Learn Not to Burn coordinator for the local department, a program which provides fire safety education to young school age children, said one of his main concerns is how preventable most fires actually are.
Firefighter Scott (as he is known by all the young children) would like Caribou citizens to be aware that the Caribou Fire Department has five ambulances which keeps them all very busy. “A lot of people don’t realize that we go to Bangor on transfers as many as two or three times in one day,” he stated.
The veteran firefighter also would like to make everyone aware of how easy fire prevention can be. “Smoke detectors are easy to maintain and are one of the most important things in a house.”
Away from the fire department Firefighter Jackson, who is married to his wife Penny, enjoys coaching his son Cole’s basketball team and also motorcycling.
Firefighter Scott likes Italian cuisine and classic rock music but don’t ask him to dinner if you’re serving seafood with country music playing in the background.
Of course, as all the school kids are reminded, “We like apple pie.”
