James Ryan, son of Lynne and Dana Ryan of Ludlow, received the award presented by Congressman Michael Michaud and Director of Education Susan Gendron at a ceremony held May 2 in Lewiston.
Ryan is a two-year automotive technology student at Region Two Applied School of Technology in Houlton. According to his instructor Fred Sewell, Ryan is academically at the top of his class.
“He has never refused a task, no matter how challenging,” said Sewell. “If he came to me for help, it was for my personal perspective. He would always do the research before asking for guidance on a chore.”
Sewell and his student learn from each other.
“I have learned from him on various topics of common interest, like logging,” said Sewell, “which he has done with his family most of his life.”
Ryan works well among his classmates and is a role model for them, Sewell said.
“James helps classmates succeed in projects that they are working on with his vast academic and technical knowledge,” Sewell added. “He is widely respected for his leadership in class.”
Ryan has accumulated three college credits in occupational safety through Northern Maine Community College and a 30-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) card.
“James is job-ready in automotive mechanics,” said Sewell.
Ryan will be pursuing a post-secondary education at the University of Maine at Orono where he will major in forestry.
“He will make a great addition to the class of 2013 and is eager to move into the next phase of his education,” Sewell said.
