To the editor:
The volunteers of the Smyrna-Merrill Annual Spring Clean-up Day enjoyed themselves outdoors in the fresh air and the project was a huge success. On May 16 many volunteers gathered at the town office and then went off to their assigned routes to pick litter along roadsides. Many residents having scheduling conflicts, but still wanting to participate adopted routes earlier in the week and cleaned their roads prior to Saturday. Volunteers picked truckloads of garbage from along the roadsides to be hauled away.
We want to thank Torrie Bates for heading up a group of volunteers to beautify a segment of the East Branch of the Mattawamkeag River and a huge thank you to Randy Rockwell for heading up a group of volunteers to improve the Merrill Millstream Park. We extend a huge thank you to the Selectmen for once again putting up the flags along the roadsides.
To those of you who picked litter, thank you, thank you, thank you! We cannot tell you how much we appreciate everyone who participated in the Spring Clean-up Project; it looks so nice to drive along the litter free roads.
And to those of you who throw garbage out, shame on you. Think before you roll your window down to hurl garbage out — someone else has to come along behind me to clean up this mess.
Candy Nevers,
Town Manager
