Byron, Leora A., 83, May 13, 2009. Arrangements by Bowers Funeral Home, Houlton. BANGOR & ISLAND FALLS – Leora A. Byron, 83, died May 13, 2009, at her home on Pleasant Pond. She was predeceased by her husband, Russell E. Byron, her friend and soulmate. She was born Sept. 13, 1925, in Winterville, the daughter of Daisy Michaud.
She was a graduate of Island Falls High School and Husson College. Leora raised her family in Millinocket. During those years she worked as a librarian at the public schools and municipal library. She also volunteered for a number of organizations throughout her life. Leora enjoyed her family and time at Pleasant Pond, where her greatest pleasure was cooking for them. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling during her retirement. One of her highlights was seeing the Pope on her 75th birthday in Rome.
She is survived by three children, Peter and Olivia Byron of Bristol, Conn., Candace and Bob Guerette of Bangor and John Byron and Mary Jo Cross of Portland; four grandchildren, Amber and April Byron, Aimee Guerette and Josh Bears; one sister, Ann Russell of Millinocket; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother; husband, Russell; and one brother, Kent Michaud.
A memorial Mass was celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Catholic Church, York Street, Bangor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Visiting Nurses of Aroostook or Island Falls Lakes Association, care of Bowers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 579, Houlton, ME 04730.
