Lions Club prepares for Memorial Day parade

The Mapleton Lions Club will host its annual Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony. All events will be held on Memorial Day, May 25, with the parade starting at 2 p.m. and the remembrance ceremony starting 15 minutes after the parade ends. The parade will start from Main Street and Dudley Road on the west side of Mapleton and will end at the Mapleton Elementary School. Any group, organization or individual may participate in the parade.

Everyone is invited to view the parade and attend the remembrance ceremony that will be held at the monuments recognizing the Mapleton-Chapman-Castle Hill citizen soldiers who sacrificed so much for our freedom and liberty. We invite all military servicemen and women who formerly served or currently serve in our armed forces. Memorial Day is a day to remember those who protect our freedom.
If you wish to participate in the parade, please contact Steve Hanning, club president at 764-5170, or write to the Mapleton Lions at mapletonlions@yahoo.com. We look forward to seeing everyone.

A Big “Thank You” from the Mapleton Extension
Our new 2009 queens have been crowned: Katelynn Hartt is our new Miss Mapleton, Hannah Stoutamyer is the new Junior Miss Mapleton and Jaidyn Blake is our new Little Miss Mapleton. The Mapleton Extension would like to congratulate our town’s new queens! We would like to thank both directors of this year’s pageants. First, Rebeckah Perry. Rebeckah was our director for the Junior and Miss pageant. This was the first time Rebeckah has been a director for one of our pageants and she did an excellent job. Next, Jennifer Buzza. Jennifer has been directing Mapleton’s Little Miss pageant for eight years now and, as usual, did a wonderful job. We would like to thank both Jennifer and Rebeckah for all of their hard work and dedication in making these pageants happen. These pageants help fund our small organization in hopes that we will be able to continue giving back to the residents of Mapleton, Castle Hill and Chapman. Without people like these two women, willing to donate their time and talents for the young ladies of our communities, we would not be able to give each of our participants the experience that they have shared together in the days leading up to and including the day of the pageants. These girls go on to represent our town by participating in a number of community events, parades and, of course, at the Potato Blossom Pageants. Again, thank you both, Rebeckah and Jennifer. You did a great job!
We also would like to thank the Mistresses of Ceremonies for both pageants. The Junior and Miss pageant was emceed by Alex Cheney and Chelsea Kaiser. Patti Crooks was the emcee for the Little Miss. All three went above and beyond to make the pageants what they were. Patti, thanks, too, for loaning extra stage decorations and donating gifts for the participants.
This year, for the first time, the Mapleton Extension asked for donations toward a scholarship for the 2009 Miss Mapleton. We would like to thank the following businesses for their contributions: Gardengate Fabrics, Mapleton Lunch, Pizza House, Reno Guerrette Carpentry, W.C. Doyen & Sons, Chandler Farms, Inc., Polaris, Debbie’s Daycare, and Buck Construction.
We would also like to thank S.W. Collins for their material donation of blueboard insulation, which was used to make decorations for the Little Miss pageant.
Lastly, we would like to thank the Mapleton Lions Club for the opening their hall to allow all contestants to rehearse in preparation for their pageants.

Retirement Party
The Mapleton Elementary School is hosting a retirement party for Principal Gail Gibson. After 37 combined years of teaching and serving as principal, Gail will be retiring at the end of this school year. Please join the Mapleton Elementary School in thanking Ms. Gibson for her years of dedication to the children of our community – past and present! A celebration is planned for Friday, May 15 at 6 p.m. at the State Road Advent Christian Church gymnasium. In lieu of gifts, it is Ms. Gibson’s wish to send all interested children to summer camp. A money tree will be available for those who wish to donate toward this goal. Please contact Kori Ellis at 764-4467 with any questions.
Upcoming Holidays
Friday, May 15 is National Pizza Party Day! What a great excuse to go out to your favorite pizza “joint” and celebrate! Experiment a little and try some unusual toppings!
Saturday, May 16 is Armed Forces Day. The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated May 20, 1952. According to a New York Times article published May 17, 1952: “This is the day on which we have the welcome opportunity to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces … to all the individuals who are in the service of their country all over the world. Armed Forces Day won’t be a matter of parades and receptions for a good many of them. They will all be in line of duty and some of them may give their lives in that duty.” Let us all take a moment this Saturday, especially, to think of those men and women serving in all branches of our armed forces, here and abroad.
Picnic Potluck
The Castle Hill Advent Christian Church is hosting a picnic potluck Wednesday, May 20. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. Ernie Boykin will be providing the musical entertainment.

Thank You!
The Boy Scout Troop 170 would like to thank everyone that donated bottles and cans this past Saturday. All your donations will help raise money for local Boy Scouts to attend summer camp. If you would still like to donate, please call Scoutmaster Peter Starr at 764-8189 or 551-5196 to schedule a pickup.
The troop also invites any young men between the ages of 11 and 18 who might enjoy camping, hiking, swimming, and many outdoor activities to come visit them. This week we will be meeting the Starr home, 53 Moose Ridge Road, Mapleton, on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. so come see what it’s all about. If you have any questions, please contact Peter Starr.
Castle Hill Grange Hall Preservation Society
Candy bars are still on sale and can be purchased at Clukey’s Auto, Chandler Farms and the Mapleton Town Office.
The Society has voted to offer a couple’s lifetime membership for $150. If two people from the same family would like to join, this option would save $50, rather than purchasing one lifetime membership for $100.
The Grange Hall is available for rent May 1-Nov. 1. Please contact any member if you are interested in renting the hall for your event. The Society meets one night a month from February through November and welcomes new members. Please consider helping the Society preserve a piece of local history.
