HOULTON, Maine — The county commissioners discussed fairly good news at their April 1 meeting in Houlton. Among the items discussed was the planned April 17 open house for the court staff in Houlton now that the building renovation is complete. Commissioner Paul Adams will make remarks at the event.     The Maine Municipal Bond Bank notified the county that the $500,000 debt on the county jail in Houlton  has been retired, making the jail facility debt-free.
A new three-year lease with the Army recruiting office has been approved at $1,500 a year resulting in a  $500 a year increase in revenue.
The Maine Public Utilities Commission has granted Aroostook County’s request to change Public Safety Answering Point providers from the Department of Public Safety to the Penobscot Regional Communication Center for landline 9-1-1 calls. The effective date of the changeover will be on or around July 1.
The commissioners approved the county tax on property at $1.088 per thousand on assessed valuation for each town. They also approved a due date of September 1 and an interest rate of 8 percent on delinquent taxes as had been recommended by the county administrator. For example, according to County Administrator Douglas Beaulieu, Houlton’s county tax for the calendar year will be $282,010.         A grant of $1,775 to purchase a 100-watt radio for a fire truck was made to the North Lakes Fire and Rescue from the Maine Forest Service.
At that meeting the commissioners also approved hiring Gerald Saccucci of Fort Fairfield as full-time custodian for the Caribou Courthouse. And, the low bid of $29,235 to purchase a one-ton pickup was awarded to Martin Ford of Fort Kent.
The next scheduled meeting of the county commissioners will be April 15 in Fort Kent.
