Hunter Safety Course
    A Hunter’s Safety Course will be held Tuesday, May 5 and Saturday, May 16, with the course meeting the mandatory Maine licensing requirement for first-time hunters and is recommended for all Maine hunters.
    The first session on May 5 will meet from 6-8:30 p.m. at Houlton High School, Room 32, while the second session on May 16 will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Houlton Higher Education Center. Attendance is mandatory at both sessions.
    Instructor is Maurice Brewer. Cost is $3. To register, call the Adult Education Office at 521-3100, extension 5.
    Students must be 10 years of age to take the Hunter Safety Course. Students between the ages of 10-12 must be accompanied by a guardian who is 18 years old or older.
Ludwig wins opening river race
    Houlton’s Fred Ludwig paddled his kayak to a first-place finish in last Saturday’s 30th annual St. George River Race in Searsmont.
    There were 109 crafts starting the race, with 106 finishing.
    Ludwig maneuvered the six-mile course with the fastest time of day — 41 minutes, 12 seconds.
     The next Maine Canoe Kayak Racing Organization (MaCKRO) race is Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Passagassawakeag River Stream Race.
