As chairman of the “Brotherhood of the Whiskers,” I remember very well the eventful summer of 1959. Our group had a parade every week with a “stockade” on a truck to pick up anyone without a beard, put them in the stockade and fine them. Nobody was immune. This was our responsibility. The chairman of the centennial, Sid Graves, had a large responsibility and did a fantastic job. There were hundreds of people involved, including members of the Air Force and their families. Different organizations throughout the summer had various activities which they sponsored.
During the summer, many people, including myself and my wife, Gloria, rehearsed at the Rec Center for the “Centennial Pageant” that was presented at the fairgrounds.
I was proud to be a part of this memorable celebration with other members of this community. The memories will remain with me.

DURING THE SUMMER OF 1959, the city of Presque Isle celebrated its 100th birthday. Joe Olore was chair of the “Brotherhood of the Whiskers,” which held a parade every week with a “stockade” on a truck to pick up anyone without a beard, put them in the stockade and fine them. Members of the brotherhood included, front row, from left: Dick Hickey, Phil Michaud, Tom McGlaughlin and Eddie Roope. Back row: Earl Britton, Joe Olore, Russ Marston, Jim Keefe and Herman Daigle.
