MSSM students featured at the Hall of Flags in Augusta

    LIMESTONE — Students from the Maine School of Science and Mathematics recently showcased their work to legislators at the Capitol building in Augusta.

    Maine School of Science and Mathematics students showcased their work for legislators at the Hall of Flags in the Maine State House on Monday, March 23. Student Renee Symonds presented a poster detailing the internship that she recently completed at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor. Symonds indicated that in her research, "I was looking at data already collected" about mouse genes "that could affect body weight" or were associated with diabetes.

    This year’s exhibits focused on Alumni in Maine’s Economy, Maine Businesses Supporting Maine’s Future, The MSSM and Maine’s Legislative Districts, and Alumni Testimonials.
    The MSSM student body currently represents 31 of 35 Senate districts and 70 of 131 Representative districts. More than 60 students, parents, faculty and alumni from across the state were on hand to discuss the unique and academically challenging opportunities provided at MSSM.
    Students in attendance took the opportunity to thank their legislators and senators for their support of MSSM. Patrick Brown of Lisbon Falls, Andrew Varnerin of Sumner, Ethan McQuire of Augusta, Mike Brown of Berwick, Ryan Keating of York, Ronin Rice of Kennebunkport, Alaina Borst of Wells, Joe Durgin of Shapleigh, Rhomni St. John of South Portland, Una Huang of Readfield, Ian Curtis of Owl’s Head, Douglas McCadden of Lyman, Samuel Putney of Biddeford, Alexandra Holcombe and Tyler Beaulieu of Caribou, Sarah Cropley of Topsham, Ashley Hunt of Naples, David Smith of Kennebunk, James Havu of Hollis, Devin Ward of Greenville Junction, Robert Mushrall of Verona, Renee Symonds of Belgrade, Casey Thornton of Waterboro, Sam Davidson and Anthony Nuzzo of Litchfield were among the students representing their hometown communities and MSSM.
    Governor Baldacci took time to speak with the students, parents, and alumni on hand and recognized the importance of the educational opportunities provided to students at MSSM.
    Featured exhibits included student internship presentations, projects, research and publications. Their works include research at the Jackson Laboratory, a wind turbine project, internships with Stantec, Telford Aviation, Pepin and Associates, the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum, Delorme Publishing, Penobscot Valley Hospital, and Maine Medical Center Research Institute.
    There will also be interactive displays from January term activities such as Arthurian Legends, GIS Mapping, Computer Science Seminar, Computational Biology and the Gatsby Ball.
