In Portland, at the Casco Bay Tournament, the MFX hockey team won all three games to end their season as the tournament champions.
On Feb. 28 the Presque Isle Wildcats took on Casco Bay Wild in what looked to be a tight game. Once Presque Isle started scoring, they were unstoppable. PI won with a final score of 8-3 and Heinz Schumacher faced 17 shots on goal. Presque Isle took 23 shots on Casco Bay and suffered one penalty, while their opponents had three. PI saw two goals from Eric Benson, five from Thomas Patenaude and one from Jake Stevens.
Later that day, Presque Isle went up against the Huskie Pirates and won 7-1. Schumacher took 23 shots on goal and PI had 35 on the Pirates. The Wildcats only had one penalty and Benson’s two goals, Patenaude’s four and Stevens’ one helped the Wildcats secure the win.
That night the team got together and watched an exciting Portland Pirates game that ended in a shoot out. After a late night arrival back at the hotel, the players, coaches and parents had a 4:30 wake up call for their 6:10 a.m. game against the Casco Bay Thrashers.
After four goals from Patenaude, two from Benson and one from Bailey York, the Wildcats took a 7-1 victory over Casco Bay. Schumacher stopped 16 shots and Casco Bay’s goalie faced 32 shots from Presque Isle.
Kyra Schumacher, Devin Ireland, Torey Levesque and Tyler Levesque all contributed good back checking and defense and had a huge part in keeping the opponents from getting chances on scoring.
For the weekend, Presque Isle had 22 goals and only allowed their opponents 5. Schumacher took a total of 56 shots in the net while P.I. slapped 90 shots at opposing goals. The MFX hockey team is 16-7-1 for the year with a total of 194 goals. In the course of the season, PI only allowed 83 goals to be scored on them. Schumacher stopped 539 shots this season and P.I. took 666 shots on their opponents.
With the tournament win, the MFX hockey team’s season came to a close. None of this would have been possible without their team sponsor, MFX, and other countless sponsors who help to support our organization. Thanks to all of the parents who put in several hours on making this organization what it is today; it was a great year. A huge thank you to coaches Pierre Patenaude, Kevin Schumacher & Terry Levesque as they were awesome with the children. They taught them so much on individual & team skills, how to win and lose as a team and most of all to have fun. Thank you will never be enough for all the volunteer time you have put in.
Lastly, this tournament would not have been possible without the generous donation by a friend in the community. Your thoughtfulness, and great act of unselfishness will never be forgotten. Thank you so much.
