Volleyball season has come and gone in Aroostook County, and it’s not even April.
The sport, which started the beginning of March, concluded in Presque Isle and Caribou March 18 at the Aroostook League volleyball championship
Teams from Caribou, Fort Kent, Houlton, Madawaska and Presque Isle competed in two back-to-back matches and when the results came in, the Presque Isle boys and girls teams were both named the 2009 Aroostook League volleyball champions.
The girls teams took over the Wildcat gymnasium at 3:30 p.m. Against Madawaska, Presque Isle won the first match 25-22 but suffered their only loss in the second match, 25-17.
The Lady Wildcats jumped ahead after defeating Fort Kent twice, 25-17 initially, then 25-13. Following the Warriors, Presque Isle took on county rival Caribou and won 25-11 and again 25-14.
In their final matchup against Houlton, the Wildcats defeated the Shires 28-26 and 25-22 to give them a 7-1 overall record and a first place finish. Madawaska finished in second followed by Fort Kent, Caribou and Houlton.
The boys teams headed to the Viking gymnasium where the Wildcats suffered an initial loss to Madawaska, 25-23 but won the following game 25-17.
Presque Isle lost again to Caribou 25-20 but came back to beat the Vikings 25-10, moving on to defeat Houlton twice, with a first game score of 25-8, then again at 25-15.
Finishing up the championship, Presque Isle took on Fort Kent and won, 25-13 and then 25-20, solidifying their place in first.
Madawaska was the boys’ runner-up followed by Caribou, Fort Kent and Houlton.
