Wildcat players of the week
The Varsity Club and Big Cheese Pizza are pleased to congratulate Russ Mortland and Jocelyn Davis for being selected as athletes of the week of March 16-21. Mortland had several key serves, spikes and digs to lead the boys volleyball team to the 2009 Aroostook League Volleyball Championship title.
Davis’s enthusiasm and team spirit exemplifies the concept of team. Davis was one of many who contributed to the girls volleyball team’s 2009 Aroostook League Volleyball Championship crown.
Novice team takes win, tie and loss
The MFX novice team’s record is now 16-7-1 with two recent wins and a loss. On Feb. 15, Presque Isle played Woodstock at home and tied 8-8. Eric Benson recorded a hattrick for Presque Isle and Thomas Patenaude put in five. In goal, Heinz Schumacher faced 31 shots and P.I. took 30 on Woodstock.
On Feb. 14, Presque Isle fell to Carleton 1 in Florenceville, N.B. with a final score of 3-2. Patenaude had his team’s only two goals and Schumacher faced 30 shots while P.I. took 28 on Carleton 1.
The team’s most recent game, a win, was Feb. 21 when Presque Isle beat Carleton 2 at home, 18-4. Jake Stevens netted two goals, and Patenaude had eight. Devin Ireland put in three, Torey Levesque had one and Benson put in four. Schumacher stopped 27 shots and Presque Isle took 29 on Carleton 2.
In all above games, assists came from Amelia Theriault, Bailey York, Kyra Schumacher and Tyler Levesque.
The MFX play again at the Casco Bay Mites Madness Tournament in Portland.
Frozen Ropes baseball comes to the county
Join Maine’s Best Training Center, Frozen Ropes, for a Spring Training Clinic April 20 and 21. The training will focus of five tools: hitting, pitching, fielding, throwing and base running and will be led by Frozen Ropes owner Mike Coutts.
Clinic one is from 9 a.m.–noon for 8-12 year olds. Clinic two will be held from 1-4 p.m. and is for ages 13 and up. On April 20, a coaches clinic will be held from 6-8 p.m. and cost is $25 per coach. For children, pre-registration costs are $80 prior to April 15 or $100 to sign up at the door.

Umpires needed
The Northern Maine Softball Umpire’s Association is looking for new umpires for the upcoming high school softball season. There will be a clinic for those interested in becoming Federation High School or ASA softball umpires. The clinics will be held at the Presque Isle High School Conference room and will be held April 4 and April 11, both days 9 – 4. Track and Field clinic offered in Orono
The Maine Association of USA Track and Field will conduct a track and field official’s clinic on Sunday, April 5 in Orono at the town council chambers, Town Office Building, 59 Main Street. Registration is at 12:30 and the clinic will go from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
