Houlton Senior High School held its science fair and winners were awarded first through third. However, the biology category had its best showing ever with 53 projects displayed, with the top five receiving recognition.
Teacher Jean Maunder said, “The projects overall were better this year since the students had more time to work on them during the year.”
Overall winners for the 2009 science fair are: first, Ashir Abouleish, Lowell Matthews and Elliot Mooers, Trebuchet; second, Chelsi Murray, blood; and third, Megan Gerath and Ashley Hannigan, Music and memory with Alzheimer’s.
Winners in individual categories are, as follows:
• Biology: first, Marina DiMarco, Horses’ Pasterns Flexing on Jumps; second, Dakota Jenkins and Abby Kinens, Which Piece of Hockey Equipment Harbors the most Bacteria?; third, Josh Carmichael and Dan Toby, Phototropism and Light; fourth, Maggie Garcia Ponder, Orange Juice Pphysiology; and fifth, Aaron Anderson, Aeroponics.
• Chemistry: first, Murray; second, Zacharia Harvey and Brandon Clark, What Causes Silos to Explode? And third, Sophia Sgiers, Which Orange Juice has the Most Vitamin C?
• Consumer Science: first, Amanda Fogarty and Alyssa Rose, Which Smoke Alarm Works First?
• Earth Science: first, Kelsey Fitzpatrick and Daisy Torres, Green Roofing; second, Tara Beals and Nick Hannigan, Which Oil Spill has the Greatest Effect on the Environment? and third, Kylee Brooker and Haley Prosser, Effect of Sunlight on Pond Ecosystem.
• Physics: first, Abouleish, Matthews and Mooers; second, Hiba Bilal, Stephanie Kreyssig and Chris Sewell, Color vs. Heat Absorption; and third, Tessa O’Donnell, Shawn West and Kourtney Kibler, Heat.
• Psychology: first, Gerath and Hannigan; second, Brian Tuttle, Light vs. Dark; and third, Bailey Katz and Dustin Fitzpatrick, Music and Concentration.
