PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Eric Waddell, principal of Presque Isle High School, has announced that Sara Appleby, Jacob Buob and Mimi Smith have been named Commended Students in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program.
A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corp. (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors at the annual Academic Awards Banquet in May.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2009 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.4 million students who entered the 2009 competition by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
“The young people named Commended Students in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program are distinguished by their strong academic performance in this rigorous competition,” said a spokesperson for NMSC. “Our nation’s pursuit of educational excellence can be furthered by publicly honoring these outstanding students and by acknowledging the important role schools play in fostering their development. We hope that this recognition will contribute to their educational opportunities and encourage all students to strive to realize their potential.”
Appleby transferred to Freeport High School last spring, Buob is a homeschooled student currently attending the University of Maine at Presque Isle, and Smith is a senior at Presque Isle High School.
