Just in time to help the citizens of Caribou and surrounding areas celebrate the City’s 150th birthday, the Caribou Historical Society Museum and Learning Center, a Whittier Memorial, will be opening for the year beginning Jan.24, featuring a variety of special exhibits and programs.     The museum exhibits will be open for public viewing on Saturday afternoons from 12-4 p.m. Most of the displays will be featured for a four-week period with demonstrations and guest speakers also planned.
The first exhibit will highlight the Winter Carnival and Sportsman Shows which began in 1935 and continue today. This exhibit will include a grouping of photographs depicting a variety of events and activities from those early days and will be accented by the display of skies and ski poles used by the first Bangor to Caribou ski marathon winner.
Other exhibits being considered by the museum volunteers include:  Boy Scout and Girl Scout uniforms and other material; railroads, logging, farming, hotels, churches, schools, early kitchen and laundry equipment, genealogy, medical professions, and hospitals among others.
The Caribou Historical Society members hope these topics offered during the Sesquicentennial, will make “Our Roots Run Deep,” by educating, entertaining and enlightening visitors.
The Caribou Historical Society members are able to put together these exhibits using materials from their collections and with items offered from community members. Their goal is to do more by providing more space for individuals to add items from their collections thus not only making the exhibits better but also increasing visitor’s learning and enjoyment experience even more.
Anyone with items they wish to loan for the duration of an exhibit, or having ideas for other exhibits  may contact Dennis Harris at 498-2556.
