Keep walkways safe for postal deliveries throughout the winter

The U.S. Postal Service welcomes your good business. In fact, between Thanksgiving and the Christmas holiday, your letter carriers will have delivered nearly 19 billion letters, cards and packages. But, in true New England style, Mother Nature beat Santa to the mailbox.
That’s why we remind you to include that mailbox in your snow removal routine.
For curbside mailboxes, snow must be removed for safe, uninterrupted deliveries. Watch for slow-moving postal vehicles, particularly as the days grow dark in winter. Add a reflector and house numbers to your mailbox for visibility by your letter carrier, plows, emergency vehicles and others. And don’t zip by neighbors who are clearing mailboxes or collecting their mail.
For doorstep deliveries,  painted porches and steps quickly grow hazardous. While salting or rubber-backed mats help, we rely on you to clear the snow. Be sure your hand rails are secure, stable and in compliance with any local building codes.

Don’t ignore icicles on snowy overhangs. And leave a light on to help illuminate potential hazards on the way to your mailbox.
A clear path to the mailbox is tops on our list for Santa  this year.
