The members of the American Legion Chester Briggs Post #47 and its volunteers served more than 500 area seniors a Thanksgiving meal on Sunday, Nov. 23.
“Clarence Swimm began this tradition several years ago and it has just continued to grow, explained Commander Calvin Mooers. “This year I am pleased to say it was even more of a success.”
Mooers reported that more than 300 people were served at the Post and volunteers delivered over 200 more meals to people that were unable to get out. He said that the response was overwhelming and people thanked the volunteers not only for this meal, but also for other functions and community activities they provide.
Ask anyone what they are thankful for and a variety of things come to mind, such as; family, food, shelter, loved ones or a job. However, for many of the elderly Houlton residents they are most thankful for the Legion and the volunteers that provide this free meal. It means a day out when otherwise they may have eaten alone or certainly not had a full course meal.
Commander Mooers reiterated the importance of the volunteers including the Legionnaires, the Sons of the American Legion, the Ladies Auxiliary and the Junior members.
He wanted to let everyone know how appreciative he is of all the volunteers that worked or made donations. Without them this day would not have been such a big success.
