CARIBOU — Local residents may have encountered some difficulty driving on Monday due to the freezing rain and snow that fell. The area received about 2 inches of snow before the rain started.
Two minimal accidents were reported in Caribou as a result from the icy conditions. Freezing rain occurs when ground level is below freezing and the air above it is warmer. The higher warmer air causes precipitation to fall as a rain drop, which freezes on contact when it comes into contact with the below freezing conditions close to the ground.
Though freezing rain isn’t expected in the near future, freezing temperatures are.
“It looks like its going to cool down in the later half of the week,” said Meteorologist Tim Duda. Temperatures are probably going to be in the low to mid 20s towards the weekend.
There is also potential for a possible storm late Sunday night or Monday, although it’s too early to be definite; more information about upcoming weather events can be found on the Caribou National Weather Service’s web page: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/er/car/.
