Dance — The dance given by the young ladies of the Unitarian Society last Friday evening was one of the most successful affairs ever given in Houlton from a social standpoint. The guests were escorted to the patronesses on entering the hall where they were received by these ladies who stood under palms and cut flowers, the floor being covered with rich rugs, while the red lights were very pretty with the beautiful dresses of the ladies. A pleasing dance order followed with music by Bryson’s Orchestra and at intermission dainty refreshments were served. A.O.Putnam acted as floor manager with F.A.Peabody, L.W. Ervin and Victor Gilpatrick as aides.

Although there has never been a cross-country team at Coburn before, Williams got enough boys interested in the sport largely through his own enthusiasm to form a team. Due to the cooperation of the Houlton High School coach Clyde Stinson, it was possible for Williams to run in the national interscholastic cross country championship race at Newark, New Jersey, which was held on Thanksgiving Day. Running from the last row in a field of 250 of the best high and prep school runners in the East, he managed to fight his way through the whole bunch and finished in eleventh position just eight seconds behind the winner. Incidentally, his time was two seconds faster than the time of the second place man in the same race a year ago.Houlton Pioneer Times File Photo 1933
