UMPI plans week-long 1968 Retrospective activities
PRESQUE ISLE – The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a week-long 1968 Retrospective from Nov. 10 – 15 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the year 1968. The Retrospective will include roundtable discussions, presentations, movie screenings, musical performances, an art exhibit and a conversation with journalist and Vietnam War correspondent Richard Dudman. Dudman will present an interactive discussion on Friday, Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m. in the Campus Center as part of UMPI’s Distinguished Lecturer Series. All events are free and open to the public. SAGE history course set to begin
PRESQUE ISLE – The Seniors Achieving Greater Education (SAGE) program of the University of Maine at Presque Isle is offering a 15-week course for adults age 50 and older who have an interest in Presque Isle history. Kimberly Smith, of the Presque Isle Historical Society, will deliver lunchtime lectures beginning Dec. 2 as part of SAGE’s “Our Town” course. She will cover topics of local interest including: The History of the Aroostook Valley Railroad, Maysville Grange, Northern Maine Fair, Presque Isle Library, as well as other biographical and cultural features about Presque Isle and central Aroostook County. OAPI offers kayak clinic, caving trip
PRESQUE ISLE – The Outdoor Adventure Program International of the University of Maine at Presque Isle is offering a kayak roll clinic and caving trip during November for students and community members. The whitewater kayak roll clinic will be held Friday, Nov. 21, from 1:30 – 4 p.m. in the Gentile Hall Pool. The clinic is free for Gentile Hall members and UMPI students; cost is $7 for non-members. No experience is required, with OAPI providing the kayaks, spray skirts, paddles, lifejackets and instruction.
OAPI will also offer a Caving Trip to Quebec on Saturday, Nov. 22, for those interested in learning spelunking – the exploration of caves. No experience is required. OAPI provides transportation, snacks and helmets. Cost is students/$25 and non-students/$40. Ehrlich display continues at gallery
PRESQUE ISLE – “Consider a Moment of Stillness,” the ceramic art exhibit of Manhattan artist Risa Hirsch Ehrlich, continues on display in the Reed Fine Art Gallery of the University of Maine at Presque Isle through Wednesday, Nov. 26. The public is invited to view her work during regular gallery hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The gallery is closed Sundays and University holidays. FMI, 768-9611.
