Mayes brings Boy Scouts gifts

Scout news
Arelius Mayes, the troop commissioner for the District area of Colorado Springs, Colo., recently visited Aroostook County and took time to stop by the campsite of Troop 177 in Washburn. There were 14 Scouts and 7 leaders present. Arelius’s father-in-law, Lucien Ouellette, accompanied him.

During the visit, Mayes, who is known to the boys as “Catfish,” told of how Washburn’s Troop 177 is involved in so many activities, and how impressed the Colorado Scouting District is. He also noted that they have a special bulletin board in their Colorado meeting place, and he puts the news of the Washburn Scouts up on it. He also thanked the press for putting so much in on the Scouts.
Several years ago, Catfish brought each of the Scouts a medal denoting their proud membership in Scouting. Several of the boys were wearing these medals this week, while Catfish brought more honors to the Scout troop and a civilian. The awards are known as “Friendship Sticks” and are hand-made, about 13 inches long. The symbols drawn on the stick include “C F” (for Catfish), and the initials of the person who is receiving the stick. Other symbols on the stick include the six pillars of Character Counts which include: Trust, Respect, Responsible, Fair, Caring and Citizenship. The persons receiving the stick must make his own stick within one year and present it to whomever they believe to be an outstanding person.
Mayes presented a Friendship Stick to Scoutmaster Larry Harrison, honoring him for his military service and dedication to Scouting. He gave another Friendship Stick to newspaper correspondent Christie Cochran for her efforts in getting the Scouts plenty of news coverage over the years. Mayes also provided Larry and Christie with special token gifts.
He also gave the boys “homework.” telling them to make their own Friendship Sticks and reminded them to carefully choose whom to give them to. He told them not to give them “out like water,” but make sure of who truly deserved and needed one.
Mayes also received an award of his own, a plaque from Troop 177. He had inadvertently told the Colorado Scouts that the campsite on Scout Drive off the Everett Road was on the Allagash! When he drove into the campsite, he was aware of his error and will likely inform the boys in his District of the difference! It certainly made for a good laugh at the campsite.
