DYER BROOK — The Southern Aroostook Warriors scored early in the second half to defeat Ashland, 1-0, in last Wednesday’s Eastern Maine Class D championship match. Brittany Charette supplied the only goal of the game by stealing the kickoff, passing to teammate Rochelle Nadeau, and receiving a pass back from Nadeau and knocking a shot from 12 yards out into the right corner of the goal. The goal came just 15 seconds into the second half.
Taylor Baker saved nine of 10 shots in goal for Ashland, who finished 12-4-1 on the year, including splitting its regular-season series with the Warriors.
Emily Cummings of Southern Aroostook saved seven of eight shots. The Warriors went on to win the state title Saturday, defeating Greenville, 1-0, in an overtime match played in East Millinocket.
