100 Years Ago: Nov. 5,  1908

• A party consisting of Frank Hughes, Peter Albert, James Gahagan, Harvey Somers and John Gee have returned from a hunting trip to Portage Lake, bringing with them four fine deer.

• Prof. Harry M. Wheeler tendered the members of the Caribou High School football team a banquet at the Vaughan House.
• Potatoes are at $1.60 a barrel.
• The slaughter of human beings in the woods of Maine thus far this season exceeds the bloodiest record of the past. The season is not yet  half over, yet the fatalities  already equal the number recorded for most full seasons, seven persons having been killed, eight suffering wounds.
• Caribou High School enrollment is at 123 students, one more than Presque Isle High School, therefore CHS can lay claim to being the premier high school in the county in point of attendance.
• Miss Alma Smiley entertained a large number of friends at her birthday party.

75 Years Ago: Nov. 2, 1933

• Dr. Frederick L. Gregory succeeds Charles T. Brett as commander of the Henry B. Pratt, Jr. Post of the American Legion in Caribou.
• Judge Donald C. O’Regan received a telegram stating that the Secretary of the Treasury has ordered the Caribou Airport re-designated as the Port of Entry for one more year.
• Elisha Hale, Burham Belyea, Earl Chandler, Arnold Hale and Albert Sutherland went on a hunting trip to Masardis last week.
• A letter received by Mrs. H.W. Orndoff from a friend in Salina, Ala., states that the latter is paying five cents a piece for potatoes in that city.
• Clayton Robertson returned home from the University of Maine this weekend, accompanied by his friend William Wood.
• The blowing of the curfew signal on the fire whistle last night, an hour earlier than usual marked the beginning of the fall and winter season when ‘curfew rings’ at eight o’clock instead of nine.

50 Years Ago: Oct. 30, 1958

• Caribou Police are continuing  intensive probes into three after-dark incidents involving two women and a young child.
• Pvt. Wade Smith of Fort Dix, N,J., has left for Utah where he will be stationed for the next two years as a cook in the U.S. Army.
• Mr. and Mrs. John B. Stairs  of Washburn recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple were married in Caribou by the Rev. F.J. Ramsdell.
• F.S. Tibbetts, Inc., Caribou Dodge-Plymouth dealer celebrated 30 years of automotive service to Aroostook with a week-long promotion.
• Gilbert Peterson has completed his work at the  Rocky Mountain Lookout Station in Estcourt and has accepted employment as a scaler of lumber in that vicinity.
• Gordon R. Dixon of Stockholm, Department Americanism Officer of the Maine Department , American Legion, will be the guest of honor at a testimonial dinner to be held at the Stockholm American Legion Post Home.

25 Years Ago: Nov. 2, 1983

 • Seven Caribou High School students who were recently inducted into the National Honor Society were: Karri Bailey, Clark Brewer, Kelley Collins, Wayne Jepson, Valerie Ketch, Diane Mahoney and Anna Yaghmai.
• Depositor’s Trust Co., opened its fourth automatic teller machine (PassKey) in Aroostook County, on Bennett Drive.
• Gerald A. ‘Jerry’ Drake, manager of the Caribou Municipal Airport, was recognized for his rescue efforts on Sept. 19, when he led a Cessna 172 aircraft in fog and overcast skies to a safe landing at the Loring Air Force Base.
• Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Morrill, while the Swedish visitors were in New Sweden were Pastor Bertil and Margit Hellsten of Linkoping, Sweden.
• The grand opening of the Kirby Center, a vacuum cleaner service was highlighted with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on South Main Street.
• Roy Doak and Andy E. Anderson were two of the delegates who attended the Democratic Rally held recently in Augusta.

 

Image    1958 — Eighteen-year-old Bob Norsworthy of Caribou bagged his first deer early this week in the Allagash country. Setting the region aside as a national park would probably end such adventures.
