The Francis Malcolm Science Center will be celebrating it’s 25th anniversary on Thursday, Oct. 23. Each student who attends a program at the Science Center during the week will receive a special gift.
Also, each class will be given a brief talk on how the Science Center came to exist. On Thursday, students will also be treated to cupcakes. The Easton Recreation students will participate in special activities with Vaughn Martin at the Center on Thursday at 3 p.m., including making apple cider, hunting for pumpkins in the woods and planting bulbs around our sign.
To end the week, Larry Berz will present a planetarium program, “Close Encounters of the 1975 Kind” on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. This is a public show and everyone is invited to attend. Please call 488-5451 for reservations. The cost of this planetarium show is $3.50 for adults and $2.50 for students and senior citizens. As always, there is no charge for members.
American Legion
The Pattee-Page Unit 187 American Legion Auxiliary of Easton held the first meeting in more than a year at the home of Marjorie Corey, on Tuesday, Oct. 14, with six members present. The meeting was opened with a prayer by Chaplain Freda Dionne, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Secretary Dottie Beaton read the minutes of the last meeting, which was held on April 3, 2007,which was also held at the home of Marjorie Corey, followed by the roll call. Those present were: President Eldora Carter, Vice President Arlene Mullen, Secretary Dottie Beaton, Treasurer Marjorie Corey, Chaplain Freda Dione and Jean Lamoreau.
The treasurer reported that she had made donations to the Caribou Veterans Home last Christmas and had also kept up with Child and Youth Rehabilitation and gifts for the outgoing 7th District president and the District president. She also purchased two “Pine Tree” subscriptions for she and the president. As of this day, there were seven paid up members.
After the reading of some articles from the “Pine Tree News,” it was voted that the Unit would donate a large flag, that was flown over the White House many years ago, to Kevin Marquis to be put in the Easton Museum. The flag was given to the American Legion Auxiliary by the Bigelow sisters, Dorothy and Katherine, when they worked in Washington, D. C., so it must be a 49-star flag. It was also voted that the Unit would purchase a flag for the recreation room at the West Ridge Manor as that one is very faded. The flag is saluted and the Pledge of Allegiance repeated at every senior citizen meeting there.
It was also decided that the Unit would help prepare the dinner for the County Council meeting to be held in Easton in January.
After the meeting, there was much discussion and reminiscing about years gone by, especially World War II, when Jean worked at the Presque Isle Air Base repairing planes before they flew off to the war. She also said she had found a book of ration stamps after her great grandson asked if she might have some. He is studying about these and, the times when they had to be used, in his class at school.
Halloween party
On Friday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. the Easton Wesleyan Church will be hosting “Trunk-or-Treat” once again. All children up to grade 6 are invited to come and play games. We have several new ones this year, in addition to a craft table. Children may also get their picture taken, spend time watching Marty the Nutty Scientist (pastor Vaughn) perform some science tricks and then gather candy from the trunks of cars parked in the parking lot. The Nutty Scientist will also draw names for some neat science prizes! This should be another enjoyable evening for the whole family, so come join us.
VISITS
David and Penny Lamoreau, and children, Zachary and Olivia, from Stamping Ground, Kentucky, arrived in Easton on October 5th, to spend a week with his parents, Collie and Rae Lamoreau, his grandmother, Jean Lamoreau, Freda and Rollie Dionne and other members of the family. On their return to Kentucky they were accompanied by Penny’s mother and father, Karl and Bonnie Fuller, who will spend the winter with family members there in Stamping Ground.
Clair and Eldora Carter made a quick visit to the Augusta area last week, traveling to Pittston on Wednesday and staying overnight with Eldora’s brother, Darrell Porter and wife, Norma, and then going for an appointment for Clair at Togus. They drove home right after the appointment. This was the first visit to Togus by the Carters and they were very pleased with the place as well as with the friendliness and promptness of the people working there.

There will be more information next week.
