Six people from Aroostook County traveled to Long Pond in Somesville on Mount Desert Island Oct. 11, where they competed successfully in the 13th annual Acadia Triathlon, organized by the MDI Lions Club as a fundraiser for its community projects.
The triathlon began with a four-mile running race immediately followed by a 13-mile bike race and a four-mile paddling race. Approximately 80 people took part in the event with 33 men and women doing all three events individually as Ironman or Ironwoman competitors and 16 groups of two to four people splitting up the three disciplines as team competitors.
Connie McLellan of Cross Lake and Sherry Dubis of Fort Kent won the Female Team Recreational Canoe Division, Brent Jepson of Woodland placed third in the Ironman 50 and Over Kayak Division, Tom Towle of Fort Fairfield won the Ironman Race Canoe Division, Jeff Dubis of Fort Kent placed fourth in the Ironman Under 50 Kayak Division, and Andy Coiley of Fort Fairfield finished 11th in the Ironman Under 50 Kayak Division.
The event attracted a wide variety of competitors, from individuals who have been to Ironman competitions in Hawaii to family members just out to enjoy the day as a team.
Contact either Jepson or Jeff Dubis if interested in participating in next year’s Acadia Triathlon, to be held the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend.
