TO THE RESCUE – Emergency personnel work to extract Stephen Dyer, 28, of Presque Isle, from the wreckage of his Jeep, following a Monday accident on the Conant Rd. in Easton. Crews from the Easton and Presque Isle fire departments and Crown Ambulance Service worked together to extricate the victim, who was later transported to TAMC where he remained hospitalized on Tuesday, listed in good condition. Dyer was traveling alone when his vehicle left the road, striking a power pole. State police continue to investigate the accident.
According to McPherson, the caller indicated the operator, 28-year-old Stephen Dyer, of Presque Isle, had abused his prescription medication and shouldn’t be operating a motor vehicle.
“Numerous area police officers attempted to locate Dyer in the greater Presque Isle area. At 2:57 p.m., a report was received through 9-1-1 that a Jeep SUV had just rolled off the Conant Rd. in Easton, striking a power pole,” said McPherson. “Trooper Rob Flynn arrived on the scene and discovered that this was the same vehicle that Presque Isle police had an erratic driving complaint on.”
Dyer was determined to be the driver and sole occupant of the destroyed Jeep.
Crews from both the Presque Isle and Easton fire departments responded to the scene. Using the PIFD’s Amkus hydraulic spreader, emergency personnel removed the roof of the vehicle to gain access to Dyer and free him from the wreckage.
“Crown Ambulance transported Dyer, who was listed in serious condition at the scene, to The Aroostook Medical Center for treatment of his injuries,” said McPherson.
Presque Isle police officers assisted emergency personnel at the scene and provided traffic control. Maine Public Service also assisted with the investigation.
Following the accident, the PIPD went to Dyer’s residence on Third St. where a vehicle had reportedly struck part of the structure. Officer Brian McQuarrie arrived at the property and, upon investigating, determined a post on the back deck near the driveway appeared to have been struck by a motor vehicle. The PIPD log stated marks in the driveway indicated the vehicle was traveling too fast for the area.
Dyer remained hospitalized on Tuesday at TAMC, where he was listed in “good condition.”
State police returned to the scene Tuesday morning to reconstruct the accident.
“We were at the scene this morning, reconstructing the accident and continuing the investigation,” said McPherson in a phone interview Tuesday.
McPherson said charges are pending.
“We’re awaiting test results. Charges will be determined once results are available,” said McPherson.
