PRESQUE ISLE SESQUICENTENNIAL now has an official logo, complete with the image of the historic firehouse and a star representative of the ‘Star City.’
since we’re known as the Star City,” said Kim Smith, treasurer for the Presque Isle Historical Society and one of the organizers for the Sesquicentennial event.
Smith said the logo has been a work in progress for some time now.
“I began looking into the logo’s design earlier this year. I looked at a plate from 1859. It was quite busy, with flowers, a lot of green and a potato at the bottom,” said Smith during a recent meeting. “It was pretty but I wasn’t sure what they had to do with Presque Isle, other than the potato.”
Meeting with the Sesquicentennial Committee, it was determined the logo – or banner – should be at the top, featuring something representative of the city, such as an historic building.
Smith said she didn’t have any success finding someone locally to create the logo.
“I didn’t have much luck locally. I came upon the designer by accident,” she said.
According to Smith, Richard Rand, a Board member for the Historical Society, happened to mention his daughter taught graphic design at a school downstate.
“He suggested I contact her with my idea, so that’s what I did,” said Smith.
To her amazement, Smith said she received a response the same day.
“I sent down my idea that morning and by that evening I had the logo back. It’s exactly what I’d hoped for,” said Smith.
The logo will now be used for promoting the city’s 2009 year-long birthday celebration.
Events planned so far for next year include various lectures, a parade, pageant, a talent show a family fun day that includes historical games and activities and many more fun events throughout the course of 2009.
The next meeting of the Sesquicentennial Committee is scheduled for Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce on the Houlton Rd.
