MARS HILL – Larry P. Smith, 78, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2008, at a Presque Isle hospital. He was born in Waterville, June 10, 1930, the son of William C. and Mildred (Sander) Smith.
He attended schools in Mars Hill and then served in the U.S. Military from July 15th, 1947, until May 27th of 1950. Upon returning, Larry took tests to complete his high school education and received his diploma. He drove trailer truck with his brother John for a couple of years for C.W. Staples Co. In November 10, 1953, he married his loving wife of fifty-four years Sara Ann (Graves) Smith of Mars Hill. In 1954, they opened Larry’s Gulf in Mars Hill which he operated until 1978. For the past 27 years, Larry drove school bus for S.A.D. 42 of Mars Hill.
He is survived by his wife Ann Smith; a son, L. Scott Smith both of Mars Hill; three grandchildren: Derek, Brooke, and Bryce Smith whom he loved and enjoyed spending time with, either at the mountain, Soap Box Derby, in the back yard or just at home. He also leaves two sisters-in-law: Donna Smith of Mars Hill, and Betty Smith of Greene; a special nephew, George “Sandy” Smith and his wife Vicki of Westfield; a niece, Kimberly Swett and her husband Clinton of Freeport; two nephews: Charles Smith of Fort Fairfield and Robert Smith of Presque Isle. Larry will also be sadly missed by his brothers and sisters-in-law: Frances and David McKay, Joyce and Carl Stearns, Bud and Norma Graves, Elizabeth Merkel and many other special nieces and nephews. Larry will be missed by his many friends and co-workers. In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by brothers: William “John” Smith, George Smith, and Jack Smith; and a sister, Lucille Long.
Friends called 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, October 14th, at the Duncan Funeral Home, 8 Main St., Mars Hill. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jim Merkel officiating. Interment will take place at Fairmount Cemetery in Presque Isle. Those who wish may make donations in Larry’s memory to the charity of ones choice.
