The Sunrise Conference has named its athletes of the week, and four University of Maine at Presque Isle student-athletes have been recognized for the week ending Oct. 5.
Trevor Hews, a junior, was named men’s soccer defensive player of the week by anchoring the defense to shutout victories over Vermont Technical College and the College of St. Joseph’s over the weekend.
Hannah Smith and Kurt Whistler, both sophomores, were runners of the week in cross country. Smith was 88th out of 276 runners and Whistler 66th out of 232 runners at the Pop Crowell Invitational.
Johannah Bubar, a junior, was named women’s volleyball player of the week after leading the Lady Owls to two wins in three matches. She had 10 aces, three digs, two kills and two assists in a 3-0 triumph over Lyndon State College, and then had six digs in a 3-1 loss to Maine Maritime Academy. She capped the week with 10 kills, two aces and three blocks in a 3-1 win over Unity College.

Aroostook County youth between the ages of 8 and 12 are invited to join Maine Winter Sports Center staff for outdoor-based skills and fitness sessions with a focus on fun.
Programs will be offered in Presque Isle, Caribou, Fort Kent and Madawaska, and will feature activities such as mountain biking, trail running, outdoor games, roller skiing and orienteering.
Each location will host an eight-week program beginning after Columbus Day, and rides from local schools are available. There is no fee to participate.
At Presque Isle, the site is the Nordic Heritage Center and meeting times are Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. beginning Oct. 16. At Caribou, the site is the Caribou High School Ski Center and the meeting times are Tuesdays from 3-5 p.m. beginning Oct. 14.

clinches playoff berth
The men’s soccer team at Northern Maine Technical College has earned a berth in the Yankee Small College Conference playoffs by virtue of a 3-1 home win over Unity College Sunday.
Dustin Graham had a goal and assisted on another for the Falcons, while Justin Lyshon and Michael Libby were the other goal scorers for the winners. Sam Petrie collected two saves on nine shots in goal for NMCC.
Tim Stephenson scored the lone Unity goal.
