To the editor:
The Kiwanis Club of Caribou celebrated its 50th Anniversary in October 2007. For at least one-half of that time, we have sponsored an annual fund-raising project each October. The annual Steak/Lobster Dinner and Auction has enabled us to earn significant funds over the past years to support many community projects – especially involving children.
The business owners and merchants in the Caribou area have been truly supportive and generous by donating many wonderful items from their businesses to auction off after the dinner. All this time, we have made every effort to keep the price of our dinner tickets stable and became known as the best “Big” meal in town.
The cost of the lobster, clams and steak have continued to rise. In addition, we have found that our loyal merchants are finding it increasingly more difficult to supply us with the kinds of auction items that draw in the numbers of customers we need for a successful project. To those merchants and business owners who have been loyal to us and have supported us over the years, we say, “Thank you!”
We have decided not to sponsor a dinner/auction project this year. We will be looking for new ways to raise funds for worthwhile projects in the community, and we hope that you all will support our new efforts in the future.
