Members of the East Grand Outdoor Education Program took part on a two-day sailing trip out of Castine aboard the 45-foot Schooner Alamar. ALL ABOARD – East Grand Students aboard the Alamar with Captain Chuck Benton, who donated his time to the East Grand Outdoor Education students.
The students won the two-day cruise in a photo contest last spring with the “Teens to Trails” conference held at Windham High School. Students took part in all aspects of the outing including hoisting the sails, tacking, reading the charts, steering and cooking below deck on a wood stove.
The two-day sail was donated by Alamar owner Llewellyn Bigelow and captained by Chuck Benton. The Alamar was built in 1947 out of wood and is a very traditional gaff rigged schooner.ON THE WATER – In the photograph above, The Alamar listing in the wind, while bottom, The Alamar under full sail.
