UMPI plays MMA to deadlock

CASTINE – The Lady Owls and the Mariners from Maine Maritime played to a double-overtime scoreless tie last Wednesday evening at Ritchie Field. The story of the night was the defense, as each squad’s back line prohibited the offenses from getting on track.     Moody preserved the deadlock in the second overtime when Katie Hutchinson slipped a pass to the oncoming Diana Manatt-Rogers, who had a seam to the net down the left side of the penalty area. But as she was about to shoot, Moody came rushing over to get her foot on the shot and deflected it harmlessly away.
Junior keeper Billie Martin of Caribou earned the shutout for the Owls, who were outshot, 11-3.
Freshman Carolyn Tuck of Brewer did a great job marking Manatt-Rogers who scored the only goal in an early-season match between the two teams.
UMPI coach Tammy Krul said her team was forced to play conservatively due to illnesses to two starters, keeping them out of the starting lineup, which limited UMPI’s scoring ability.
Next up for the Lady Owls, now 3-1-2, is an evening conference game at UM-Machias tonight at 7 p.m.
