CASTINE – Maine Maritime striker Nate Tipton converted a penalty kick in the first overtime, giving the Mariners a 2-1 win over UM-Presque Isle in a non-conference men’s soccer matchup last Wednesday night at Ritchie Field. The win avenges an earlier season loss to UMPI for MMA, as the Owls fall to 3-2-1 on the season. The Owls scored the first goal of the match in the 33rd minute of play when senior Tony Hibbard of Bingham scored off a pass from junior midfielder Corey Harding of Plymouth. Hibbard struck a perfectly placed 28-yarder into the corner of the net, just beyond the right hand of MMA goalie Jeff Butland, giving his team the 1-0 lead.
MMA, now 3-4-0, came back to tie the game as Tipton scored off a free kick with 55.5 seconds remaining in regulation and then won it with a penalty kick with 5:59 left in the first overtime. The penalty shot went low to the right of UMPI goalie Richard Felbaum of Saco, who dove to his right and got his hands on the shot, but couldn’t keep it out of the net. Felbaum made four saves on 15 MMA shots, as the Owls outshot the Mariners, 18-15.
The Owls have a conference game at UM-Machias this afternoon. Game time is 5 p.m.
