Ski clinic planned at UM-Presque Isle
The University of Maine at Presque Isle ski team will offer a dry-land ski clinic for master skiers Oct. 3-5 in Presque Isle. The clinics will be held at both the Nordic Heritage Ski Center and the university’s Gentile Hall facility. All proceeds from the $40 fee go to support the UMPI ski team. The three-day clinic of workshops and presentations is designed to introduce and develop dry-land training techniques as essential preparation for a successful competition ski season. Activities include running, roller skiing, strength, plyometrics, dry-land drills with running poles, and stretching. This clinic is recommended for cross-country skiers with basic experience on roller skis and the capability to do a 30-minute run.

Caribou boys’ defense stingy in pair of games
After suffering a 4-0 loss to Madawaska earlier in the season, the Caribou Middle School boys showed great improvement in their rematch played Thursday. The Vikes battled the Owls to a scoreless tie, with David Pelkey outstanding in goal. Dean Walker, Nolan McDuffie, Adam Collins and Zac Gorence all contributed with some fine play at midfield, while Mikey Selander and Breen Blackstone led the Caribou defense.
On Sept. 15, excellent passing led Caribou to a 6-0 victory over Fort Fairfield. Six different players had goals, with Devin Cyr, Nick Matlock, Kameron Manter, Austin Caverhill, Sean Barbosa and Lucien Caverhill all breaking into the scoring column.
Goalies Cody Herbert and Matt Frost combined for the shutout. Others playing well were Michael Boone, Alex Scott, Tyler Strid and Eric Tilmont.
Fat Tire Festival slated in Presque Isle
The TAMC/NHSC Fat Tire Festival will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle. Events will include an adventure relay, bike rodeo, downhill race and MMBA Point Series cross country mountain bike finale. For more information, visit www.nordicheritagecenter.org.
Spud Speedway results
Matt Reynolds rode his 99 car to the victory in the street stock division at Spud Speedway on Sunday. The Presque Isle driver beat out Dana York and Mark York, both of Fort Fairfield, for the win.
In the Northern Lights A event, Charles Michaud of Grand Falls, New Brunswick took the checkered flag, with Lewis Batchelder of Dixmont second and Keith Thibeau of Fort Fairfield running third.
In Northern Lights B, Presque Isle’s Shawn Dewley captured the win, followed by Castle Hill’s Jason Forbes and Centerville, New Brunswick’s Justin Brymer.
Shawn Martin of Turner took the Sitel Sportsman Series race, while Hermon’s Kris Watson and Bradley’s Dean Smart ran second and third.
The Young Guns event saw Connor Thibeau of Fort Fairfield come out on top, with Nate Haney of Connor finishing as runner-up and Austin Theriault of Fort Kent rounding out the top three.
Brittany Theriault of Fort Kent was first in the Powder Puff competition. Chelsea Nicholson of Centerville, New Brunswick was second, followed by Limestone’s Connie Sutherland in third place.
Basketball officiating school begins Monday
IAABO Board 150 will offer an officiating school for new officials beginning Sept. 29 at Presque Isle High School room 411.
The class will be held Mondays from 7-9 p.m. and the cost is $40. For more information, contact Harry Orser at 425-4451.
