Mill Pond School lures parents with food, fun

On Wednesday, Aug. 27, Mill Pond School in Hodgdon hosted a complimentary breakfast for parents and students to celebrate the first day back to school. This provided an opportunity for parents to share in the excitement of the first day back to school by coming to school with their child, eating breakfast together, and meeting their child's teacher.
Participating parents also attended a brief informational session. Robert McDaniel, SAD 70 superintendent, and Loreen Wiley, Mill Pond principal, updated parents on school test results, consolidation, and supplementary programs available to help students, such as Title I and the After-School Program.

Rhonda Foster, home and school coordinator for Mill Pond School, planned the First Day program as an opportunity to begin positive communication between the home and school and pave the way for a smooth school year. “We know that parental involvement has a huge influence on how successful students are in school. We want our parents to feel connected to the school and be
informed partners in their child's education,” she said.
This is the second year SAD 70 has invited parents to come to school with their child on the first day of school. “I am very pleased with the turnout and support parents in this district display,” Foster added.
"First Day" celebrations occur in other schools nationwide. SAD 70 received a small grant from the Maine Parent Federation to incorporate a "First Day" celebration that meets the needs of the district.
In a related matter, a "lunch and learn" workshop for parents called "Ready, Set, Go! Rev Up Your Reader" will be offered primarily to parents of children in grades pre-K through 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the SAD 70 Superintendent’s Office. Tips and resources for helping your child read at home and sandwiches and drinks will be available. Please RSVP to Mill Pond School, 532-9228.
